Media Center - Mrs. Debbie Hern
The computer lab + the library = the Media Center. To comply with the New England Association of Schools and Colleges accreditation requirements the computer lab and the library comprise the Media Center, two rooms which act as one. The goal of the Media Center is twofold: to strengthen each student’s learning fundamentals and research skills while using both online and print resources and to create lifelong readers who in turn become lifelong learners. Topics researched support classroom curriculum.
In the upper wing, emphasis is placed on curriculum reinforcement. Saint Joseph School students have researched topics including: history, past and present; contemporary and classical literature; US government, math and science; geography; current events; and global issues especially those pertaining to the environment. With the younger students, software programs help with letter recognition within word structure, which in turn increases a student’s ability with basic writing and spelling skills. Math drill software programs reinforce problem solving. Also, two handed keyboarding and computer generated artwork is part of the curriculum. Primary students enjoy literature and storytelling as part of their weekly library visits.
Saint Joseph School’s collection of books and computer equipment has expanded thanks to the birthday book program and through profits raised by previous golf tournaments. We continually strive to acquire new materials that align with the classroom curriculum. In the computer lab, the Internet is employed as a teaching tool. Prior to student viewing, all web sites used in instruction are previewed to insure they are appropriate for their intended audience and that particular criteria for selection are met. Research in the computer lab is enhanced with the World Book Encyclopedia.
As a result, the Media Center has assumed an integrated place in student learning. As the Media Center continues to expand and our collections continue to grow, our students and faculty will benefit through curriculum support and enrichment.
