Grade 2 - Mrs. Mary Welch

Schedule
Wednesday – Physical Education and Music (Wear Gym Uniform)
Thursday – Computer and Library
Friday – Art and Music

The second graders are working diligently to improve their reading skills. It is important that the students read at home, at least a half hour each day. A book report will be due on the last day of every calendar month. A book report form will be sent home. Any extra books that have been read during the month may be listed on the back of the form.

It is also important that the students study their flash cards for addition and subtraction, each evening. They should know these math facts as well as they know their own first names. Invite your children to experience different situations in your home in which a working knowledge of math is necessary. Talk to them about what a checkbook is, a bank book, and what bills need to be paid. Show them coins and currency, and talk to them about equivalent values, such as “one dollar is the same as four quarters”. When something needs to be measured with a ruler or yardstick, show them how you are doing this. When cooking or baking, discuss measurements of capacity such as cup, quart, teaspoon, tablespoon, and so on. If you still have an analog clock in your home, help your children to understand the function of the hands on the clock, and how to read the time. Although these skills will be discussed in class, it is important for the students to see that math is used every day.

Homework is assigned nearly every school day and the children will be writing their homework in their planners. They will take any homework papers home in their “take home folders”. The homework will be posted on Ren-Web also, so it would be a good idea to learn how to use that website.

As stated in my letter, sent home in early September, the children need to bring their own snacks to school. We usually take a break around 9:30 in the morning for snacks and our lunch time is 11:15.

Please refer to the letter I sent to the second grade parents for information regarding the importance of the sacraments which the second graders will receive this year. Also, I gave you my email address so that you could contact me with any questions or concerns.

I hope that the second grade will be a very positive experience for your wonderful children. God bless the students and their loving parents.
